This school year to me is full of uncertainty and stress. I finally made it to my senior year, but still feel as if I am a Sophomore. There are so many expectations of me, the class of 2022, and my leadership peers for this year. Going back to campus to a school with seventy five percent of its members not even having a full freshman year. We are very uncertain and testing the waters. But yet, I have hope and feel secure. I have an amazing friend group and supportive leadership class that will guide me and help ease the obstacles. And seeing Core Camp, with the level of enthusiasm and dedication to helping the school, I know extraordinary things can happen this year. It is all a matter of personal perseverance and using your resources. Although there are a lot of fears within our school: academic and sports related, rocky financial and home situations etc, I feel confident in myself and my peers to alleviate these challenges. And I am continuously grappling with the fact that failure is normal and is to be expected. And things alongside my senior year journey might not align or cause me to take a step back. But I have to finish strong. What is one more year of struggle for the benefit to the student body and to my future? I can not guarantee a COVID free environment or total normalcy with events, but what I can guarantee is a team of strong minded individuals who WILL put in the work to get the job done. I see success in our future, and individual growth in every student in my leadership class. And I also envision new, creative events to change perspectives and how we view our tradition and our why. Ultimately this year I want to metaphorically pass off the Olympic torch to my predecessors. I want to build a solid foundation for Ripon High to fully gain back its passion for spirit, community, and student involvement.

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”-Martin Luther King Jr.
I have always been moved by the words of MLK, his quotes are always so simple in understanding but profoundly deep in meaning. Although this quote was pertaining to segregation, I believe that it can still apply today in our daily lives. As leaders, inside of school and out, it is always where you stand in times of trouble to truly reveal your character. There are moments where escape is the easiest option, but it takes immense courage to face these obstacles or to own up to your own mistakes. As a whole this should be considered by every person, as moral integrity and perseverance is a central aspect of being a leader.
“‘Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone … just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.’”-Nick Carraway, The Great Gatsby
I just finished this novel and this was the quote that stuck with me the most, alongside it being a major theme of the work. There are so many privileges we are not even aware of. The food we eat, the air we breathe, our house, our clothes, etc. We all have some level of comfort that others will never be able to obtain. It is just as the saying of before you judge a man, walk in his shoes. You never know what someone is going through or the challenges they face. There are so many new perspectives to gain from life, and it is important to recognize your own life and what you often take for granted. Thus, you can not criticize people who were born into their situations or have had rougher circumstances than you.
“Not all of those who wander are lost.”- Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien
I take this quote to mean that it is ok to go out and explore your own path. Whether that be discovering you and who you truly are, or it could be your future. It is alright to test out uncharted territories to find yourself or your goal. You are not always lost or in failure in your search. There is strength in putting your foot into the unknown, searching for your answers. Curiosity and boldness should be qualities of leaders, unafraid to look for their own truth.

“Don’t lower your expectations to meet your performance. Raise your level of performance to meet your expectations.” – Ralph Marston
This quote is really representative of my mindset throughout my four years of high school and especially as I have transitioned to an upperclassmen. This quote is so significant because having a determined mindset and always putting in your 110% effort are the core values of leadership. Many individuals give a lackluster performance and set lower and lower goals in order to satisfy their expectations. But that is the opposite of what leaders need to accomplish. You have to set these lofty, high expectations for yourself that can be achieved with your full effort. It is important to work hard for your goals and realize your full potential, and judge how you can break the limits on what you can achieve and what you will succeed in. Creating these big goals and accomplishing them through determination and perseverance creates a positive cycle of risk and reward that is necessary in all leadership positions. If every student in our program implemented this quote, we would be more united and organized as a whole. Also, we could create higher quality events with less stress, as every single person is putting in their effort. Reflection on quotes such as these are so important, because they make you evaluate your character, work ethic, and actions. Taking leadership quotes and making them applicable to your life is a great way to grow beyond your usual leadership style and comfort zone. Leadership is growth, and reflecting on how you can change for the better will only benefit you.

Page 4- Part 1: Goals
Short Term Goals:
1. I want to push myself out of my comfort zone and try new things.
With a brand new school year after COVID I feel like a blank palette. I can completely mould and shift where I want my life to go. Within the comfort of my life I often grow bored, and it is important to take small steps out of my comfort zone to experience new things life and people have to offer me. The more new things I try the more I learn about myself and my character.
2. I desire to keep straight A’s.
I have kept this goal in my journal for the past three years. I know in my heart that if I continue to put forth the effort I have given in previous years, I will be able to accomplish this goal. My education and my grades are of the utmost importance to me, and I will continue to strive to be the best version of myself I can be within my academics.
Long Term Goals:
1. I want to see a transformation of me as a person, being able to see my growth and maturity throughout highschool.
I already have seen massive change in myself from freshman year, and I hope to continue to see this positive transformation. Change to me is not as much as physically, but emotionally and mentally. I have seen enormous growth in my confidence, leadership ability, and willingness to step outside of my comfort zone. I would hope to finish high school strong with an even better version than right now.
2. I want to end Senior year with true connections and friendships.
Going into high school I assumed I would graduate high school with my same friends from middle school, and I was terribly wrong. Through my transformation as a person I had to let go of those who did not serve me. I have prioritized those who lift me up in a positive manner, and chose to hangout with them. I additionally wish to make connections outside of school, such as with my community based leadership program. Connections help form your current reality and your future, and are essential to grow as a person.
Life Long Goals:
1. I want to take more priority in me: my health, wellbeing, and my emotions.
This is and will continue to be something I grapple with. Whenever something urgent or important is occurring, which is often every day I am in school, I put myself on the back burner and allow my physical and mental health to subsequently deteriorate. I need to work on prioritizing not only my workload but my own mental health. I also need to adapt my toxic mental thought processes and coping mechanisms of stress. This is no easy task, and can take several years to make considerable progress.
2. I want to pursue a professional career that I genuinely love and enjoy.
Throughout high school I have been able to explore myself, my interests, and what academic interests I am strong in. However, this can obviously shift over periods of time as I mature and gain more knowledge in college of my field of study. In whatever I end up doing, it needs to be a top priority of my own happiness alongside the job. This will come, all in due time.

Page 5- Part 2: Goals
1. I want to push myself out of my comfort zone and try new things.
I think I have accomplished this, but not to the level I would have liked. I went out of my comfort zone and opened myself up to new people, which allowed me to go out of my comfort zone and socialize more. I went on new adventures, tried new food, and looked into new music and hobbies. I also participated in the sober grad fashion show, which was really out of my comfort zone. But I had a great time and it was a good experience to have. I also will soon be going out of my comfort zone by speaking at the Modesto conference and also giving a speech at graduation. Though it was not a major leap, I am proud of myself for trying to branch out and be adventurous.
2. I desire to keep straight A’s.
It took a lot of effort to achieve, and something I am really proud of. I spent countless hours ahead of time completing my AP assignments in advance and studying for my tests. This was all with balancing all my other responsibilities, such as work and extracurriculars. This short term goal has been present now in all four of my portfolios, and I am proud to say that I was able to complete the goal every single time. My education and maintaining my academic merit has always been my top priority. Setting intentions for myself and holding myself to a high standard has allowed me to complete this goal.
3. I want to see a transformation of me as a person, being able to see my growth and maturity throughout high school.
I have definitely seen a shift in me as a person throughout high school. I think the biggest change has been influenced through my work. Having to do customer service allowed me to be more professional and quick on my feet with appropriate responses. Also, with the culmination of my years in leadership I can conduct myself in a professional manner and has changed my mindset for the better. With Senior year I have allowed myself to have some more fun and just enjoy things. I allow myself to act like myself and act weird, because who cares? I am leaving soon so I can lay down on the grass or laugh obnoxiously.

Examples include: Multicultural Acceptance Club, Girl’s League, Debate Club, and Math club. She truly values academics, and is at the top of her class with a 4.8 weighted GPA. Avery plans to be a world renowned lawyer, putting the worst of the worst behind bars. She stated, “I have a passion for serving justice and helping victims get closure on their circumstances. I have always been interested in law and government, and am so excited to apply this to a future career.”. And People is so excited to see her succeed. In regards to her current life she is currently working on her college applications, working, and studying for her various AP classes. “Maintaining a balance of hard work and fun is the key to success and an amazing high school experience,”. She explained. Her top choices for college include UC Berkeley, UC Los Angeles, and Loyola Marymount University due to their amazing education programs for government and law school attachments. She wishes to “stay at a little cottage in the summer in Sweden” and “ride on a motorcycle on the side streets of Italy”. We here at People are fascinated by her aspirations. Dream big Avery! We wish you all the best.
Page 8- Role Model
My role model is my dad, who has shaped me into who I am for better or for worse. Ever since I was in kindergarten he preached the importance of education and maintaining good grades. He also taught me the importance of hard work, perseverance, and choosing a good career path. My Dad also shaped me to crave academic validation, as that was the only way I could gain his affection. He also shames others for choosing poor career choices, so I learned I have to be a lawyer, doctor, or other highly mentally draining job in order to get a high paying salary. Though I know this is all from his own trauma of how the medical field used to be in its treatment of residents and medical students. He has led me to be cutthroat, which is both good and bad. It has led me to overall prioritize myself and my goals, but sometimes to a fault. I have become less empathetic for others, and more jaded to facilitate my own success just like he did in his own life. I get my intelligence from him, though thankfully I did not inherit his lack of observation and context clues. He has set me up for a great life, providing for me and my family and financing my college education. Though he can be rough around the edges, as is customary in Asian cultures, I know he ultimately wishes me to be successful. I am very grateful for the comfort he has brought in our life due to his job and his challenging upbringing and career, and pushing me to be the best version of myself.
Page 9- Inner Animal
I think the animal that describes me best is a fox. Foxes are known to be “cunning” or “tricksters”, but they are often also independent, clever, and mischievous. I see myself as all of these things. I am a relatively independent person, preferring to work on my own and I am comfortable with my own abilities and presence. I see myself as clever, I am usually quick to understand situations or materials, and I consider myself quick-witted. I am mischievous and like to cause trouble or poke fun at people in a non harmful way to make a situation better or just get some laughs. I like making jokes or playing pranks sometimes, so I could classify myself as a prankster. I could see myself as cunning, but not in the evil sort of way. I like to use my cleverness and independant nature to push for my own success or progress in my goal, as I often prioritize my own agenda. Or I use my cunningness to benefit my friends or a group of people. Foxes also represent protection, whether that be emotionally or physically. I consider myself very loyal, and do anything in my power to aid my friends and protect them if I can. Emotionally, I keep myself guarded from others who may hurt me or are out to get me. I am pretty observant when it comes to how other people act and react around me.

American Money- BØRNS
I was there when you fell from the clouds And landed in the desert There was a thunder inside of my heart There was a wonderful pleasure And like a stallion racing the rain You rode on the back of my bike I knew from the song that you sang You were my lover for life Oh, there's no time to sleep Oh, living in a dream So take me to the paradise It's in your eyes Green like american money You taste just right Sweet like Tennessee honey And we can run away Swimming in the sunlight everyday Paradise, it's in your eyes Green like american money So we took to the Calico road Running from the weather There was a highway inside of her eyes There was a buried treasure And we got caught in the storm You started flying a kite At the end was the key to my heart You were my lover for life Oh, there's no time to sleep Oh, living in a dream So take me to the paradise It's in your eyes Green like american money You taste just right Sweet like Tennessee honey And we can run away Swimming in the sunlight everyday Paradise, it's in your eyes Green like american money We carved our love in the mountainside We soaked our hearts in the rain And I, waited my whole life, for you So take me to the paradise It's in your eyes Green like american money You taste just right Sweet like Tennessee honey And we can run away Swimming in the sunlight everyday Paradise, it's in your eyes Green like american money |
Reflection
This song gives me so much nostalgia and reminds me of this past summer. It would come on every time I shuffled my playlists. To me it represents the part of me I don’t normally show, which is the free spirited and dreamer me. This song is how carefree I normally feel in the summer or during breaks when I can finally relax and act without stress. When I hang out with people I truly appreciate it reminds me of this song. This song is windows down blasting music, ice cream dates, and adventures under a dark night filled with stars. It represents the best and picturesque version of my life I work so hard to be able to earn. This song talks of dreams, sunshine, and star crossed lovers, which I apply to romanticizing my life, the good and the bad. I will forever love this song for the memories it reminds me of and how it reflects on me and my life. |

Page 13- What I Like Best About Being a Member of Leadership
The memory of leadership from this year that sticks out the most to me is a night of making our homecoming float for our adventure land, Jungle Cruise themed trailer. It was dark, near 9 PM. There were only a few people left, with the handful of classmates who helped paint driving home. What was left was the Senior leadership team, running off a few hours of sleep and borderline delirious. Yet, we were all enjoying ourselves and laughing at a creepy looking elephant and the stapled fish to the side of the trailer. I could feel my eyelids half closed, yet we all kept going and kept being positive. That whole day was so fun, with some of the boys running around in animal onesies that would be in the parade. I have a video of Derek banging on his chest with a gorilla costume on, and that day was just so fun despite the stress we were under. And I think that encapsulates the entirety of the leadership program. Sure we are enduring stress, but we are surrounded by so much good and fun that we should treasure, and that our work goes beyond sleepless nights.
Another great memory of mine is our Secret Santa get together on our final day. It was so relieving to have a relaxing and fun day where we could bond as a class. It was heartwarming hearing other people’s validations of each other, and the curated gifts for every person. Everyone in that room that I could tell was smiling and at ease. With the fast pace of school and the burden of finishing strong with finals, I could tell we all enjoyed each other's company and positivity in not focusing on tests. I personally had been very stretched thin, and it was nice to feel appreciated and appreciate others.
My last favorite memory was the first day of Core Camp. Though there was so much nervousness from new members in the air, I felt comfortable and at home, with this being my fourth Core Camp experience. It was so nice to be the oldest, and I had no fear in participating and getting to know everyone. The class atmosphere was so inviting and encouraging, and it was an amazing way to start off the year. My favorite part was eating Subway and getting to know the Freshmen for the first time. It was so interesting to see how far I have come, and that I was once in their same position, scared and not knowing what to expect. I was able to open myself up to them and be friendly, unlike how the Seniors were when I was a Freshman. I felt content that I could finish the cycle in a positive manner, and I could use this new perspective as a Senior for the benefit of others.
Page 14- A Reflection of a Peer in Leadership
It is very difficult for me to pick out a specific moment of April being helpful, kind, and selfless when this is her entire personality. April is one of the best leaders I have met in this program. No matter what she has going on personally, she is always there for you and the program as a whole. A prime example is with the Blanket Drive this year. She stepped up exponentially to make publicity and process forms. She was so empathetic, and was persistent to take the lead when Anthony and I had so much going on with classes, finals, and college applications. She put in extra hours and helped counting coins and communicated clearly with us and teachers. She even tried to help me out in the smaller role I had, just so I could relax more. She is so purely kind and deserves every good thing that comes to her. I see the work she puts into school, leadership, and how caring she is in all of her relationships. Even though she is younger than me, I see April as a role model.

Page 16- What I Love to Do
When I have free time, one of my favorite things to do is travel. Although this has been limited due to COVID, I still take at least one big trip to Mexico every year. This is something I look forward to every single summer, and I love being able to finally relax, enjoy myself, and to experience a whole other culture. I also enjoy taking smaller trips with friends and family, such as to Santa Cruz, San Francisco, and Monterrey. The experiences and memories made with people in my life makes traveling so important to me. Also, experiencing things outside of my small town bubble and learning about it are some of my favorite aspects about traveling. I had hoped to travel to Italy for my graduation, but unfortunately due to COVID I am unable to go. I desire to travel to France, Italy, Belgium, and Germany within Europe. Some other places I would love to visit include Japan, Canada, the Bahamas, and Korea. A large part of the human experience is getting to know others and to understand other ways of life. Traveling is an important hobby of mine, and should be a hobby of every person.
Page 17- Letter to Parents
Dear Mom and Dad,
Although we do not always see eye to eye, I am so grateful for how you raised me. Your words of wisdom and the life lessons I have learned under your care will forever impact the rest of my life. You both taught me to work hard. You taught me to always dream bigger and to always chase after my goals with everything I have in me. I learned the value of my education and to always think of my future, and this was so valuable to my mindset and the standards I hold myself to. Under your care I was able to blossom into a better leader and person, and I appreciate all of your efforts. Thank you for always caring and loving me, and being there for me whenever I have been sick or stressed. I appreciate you spoiling me with gifts on my birthdays and traveling to expensive places. Yet, you taught me to work for my money and how to be self-sufficient. I am able to function on my own and I know the importance of money and spending it right. I value our conversations and how you both always challenge and question me in my opinions and political views. You have made me a multidimensional person and let me seek out so many different perspectives. I know you have done your best to prepare me for the real outside world, and how I will take it on outside of your care like a baby bird leaving the nest for the first time. I feel so prepared for my future, and that when I do not know what to do you both will always be there to support me whenever I need it. Thank you for always being a support system for me, offering not only valuable help but encouraging me to attempt things all on my own. I appreciate you both so much. Thank you for everything.
Love,
Avery

Page 18- Your True Legacy
Dear David,
Although being a part of ASB can prove to be challenging at times, I know that you can handle it, as long as you ask for help. As ASB VP you get a very challenging activity at the very beginning of the year with the neon BTSD, and I recommend that you start working on that starting in the summer. It was not a fun time working on this with less than two weeks of preparation due to COVID. Make sure to have the facility form confirmed and the DJ booked as soon as possible. You need to be aware that the school population continues to grow every year, and there needs to be a decent place that can house the people with access to outlets. There are so many different aspects that go into this dance, and starting early and organization is key. One thing that is great about this position is that you are not directly responsible for Homecoming or Winter Fest. However, I recommend lending a helping hand whenever you can. In December you might be in charge of a community service project, which will be stressful with finals. Rely on your team of VP’s, and make sure to get approval before beginning your journey. Also, do not forget fundraiser forms and to be in contact with whatever organization you are donating to.There are a lot of activities involved in the banquet, and start working on food, awards, and decorations earlier. We are struggling to plan this now with everything else going on, so I recommend finishing this before spring break. For next year, I recommend more communication with your officers to make sure that every person is on the same page and giving their full effort. Also, something I forgot was within my job description is being in charge of fundraisers, so work with Morty to effectively plan tri tip sales or whatever fundraiser you decide on. Forms are so important, so trust in the ASB administrative coordinator to process forms and execute the behind the scenes paperwork. There is so much work to be done but I have faith in you, David. Always try your best and know you have amazing possibilities for this next school year!
Sincerely,
Avery
Page 21- The Professional
One of the major aspects of our professional development is public speaking. Being able to effectively communicate and present yourself is essential to a future career and a world outside of high school. One of the ways we practice public speaking on a regular basis is through our debriefs and ASB Meetings. We learn how to present ourselves with body language, confidence, and how to articulate our job roles. Recently, I presented my Elder project with other seniors, which was a culmination of four years of professional learning for me. Also, classmates have presented at conferences and in other leadership roles outside of ASB, which demonstrates just how important and impactful public speaking is. We also worked on public speaking with our speech in January, where we were able to learn how to speak on any topic, as in the real world we will have to present on anything and everything.
Another professional opportunity I am able to enjoy is mock interviews. We spend the entire year preparing for this event, learning how to create resumes and cover letters and exploring where we might want to go in our future career. We craft questions for the professional, being able to get an inside look on a particular industry. We also have in person interviews, where we can practice body language, professional dress, and discuss ourselves in order to obtain a job. Though it can be nerve wracking, it is an imperative part of our curriculum, and we are able to make these valuable connections and learn lessons on how to improve our professional abilities for the future. Within mock interviews, I have solidified that I am interested in pursuing a career in the legal field, and learned how to effectively talk to someone in a professional power position. Not many other high school aged students are able to have an opportunity such as this, and I know personally that I take advantage of this opportunity.

Page 22- Change
This year has proved quite challenging for me as a person and as a leader. Coming off of distance learning, yet having so many restrictions and obstacles in our paths was hard to wrap my head around. Being a senior and juggling many other responsibilities, I often let my emotions get the best of me and affect other people. An example where the entire senior class within leadership fell victim to this was during Homecoming season. We were all extremely stressed with our classes and having to suddenly do all of these activities when last year had barely any was difficult to say the least. We snapped at each other multiple times, and there were some tears and fighting. Grades were dropping fast and we were in the midst of college application season. We spent long nights at Emma’s house getting only a little bit done at a time. With hindsight, I can see some changes we needed to make. It is so important to just take one day at a time. We let our future problems and our current responsibilities overwhelm our current reality. Though we did do a lot, getting one thing done shifted the weight off of our shoulders, and instead of spending time fighting or groaning about our problems, it would have been emotionally and mentally easier to just power through it all. For the future seniors, or just any members of leadership, it is important to practice mindfulness. Moments like this are bound to happen, but our responses to them dictates our success with our events. If we realize that we are all just doing the best that we can, and that if we get it done quickly and efficiently we can finally rest, so many problems would have been solved that month. That is applicable to Winterfest, planning dances, and just life in general. Practicing self care so we do not get to that level of emotion is important as well. Leadership is all a balance of working hard and playing hard as well. If we take a second to slow down and enjoy the moment, we would have enjoyed painting cardboard safari animals much more instead of fighting over who went home early. There are always different perspectives, and it is important in a group leadership setting to remain positive.
Page 23- The Ideal Leader
An ideal leader is someone that balances personal growth and time management. Someone who isn't afraid to voice their opinions loud and proud and to stand with them even if every other person disagrees. Someone who always takes charge at the right time, while also letting their team members shine and give their input. They should allow for everyone to feel comfortable, included, and have a positive working environment. The ideal leader should be encouraging, insightful, and willing to compromise. They are someone who is always getting their work done in class, on task, and giving the highest quality of work they can do. They should be respectful to every person, no matter if they are respectful back. This person should plan their events thoroughly and ahead of time, staying on top of their work and keeping every person involved in the process informed. They should be unafraid to voice their concerns and give constructive criticism to those who need it. An ideal leader is not someone who is judgmental. They are not rude, impatient, or ignorant of what is going on around them. They are not going off task all the time and procrastinating on their homework and event planning. The ideal leader should not shoulder all of their responsibilities and take all of the credit. They should not be disrespectful, be on their phone, or only give a little effort. The ideal leader is someone who is well rounded. Someone who has many passions and priorities in their life, but prioritizes all of it. Someone who enjoys being in the program and knows why they are in the program. They are confident, organized, thorough, and passionate.
